Happy Easter Day 2008

Easter is the oldest and the most important Christian Festival, the celebration of the death and coming to life again of Jesus Christ. For Christians, the dawn of Easter Sunday with its message of new life is the high point of the Christian year.

What is the Easter story ?

Easter is the story of Jesus' last days in Jerusalem before his death. The Easter story includes Maundy Thursday (the Last supper leading to the Eucharist), Good Friday (the day on which Jesus was crucified) and Easter day (the day on which Jesus came back to life).

It is a sad story because Jesus was killed. But the story has a very happy ending, because Jesus came back to life and visited his friends and followers once more. He did not die at all, but went back up to Heaven to be with God, his father.

When is the Easter Season?

The Easter Season begins on Easter Day and lasts 50 days, ending on Pentecost.

What happened on Easter Sunday?

It was on Easter Sunday that Jesus rose from death. Jesus had told his disciples before he was arrested that he would be crucified and on the third day he would rise from the dead. Sunday was the third day from Good Friday (Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Day). The second day after Good Friday.

Easter basketWhy do we have eggs at Easter?

The first eggs given at Easter were birds eggs. These eggs were painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift.

Eggs are a forbidden food during Lent, making them a welcome return to the menu on Easter Day. For Christians, Easter eggs symbolise new life. They believe that, through his resurrection, Jesus defeated death and sin and offers people the promise of eternal life if they follow his teachings. Eggs have been a symbol of continuing life and resurrection since pre-Christian Spring celebrations.

Eggs have had a religious significance in many ancient civilizations; Egyptians buried eggs in their tombs as did the Greeks; A Roman proverb states, "All life comes from an egg". It’s probably no surprise that Christianity should also adopt the egg to symbolise the resurrection of Christ.

Balancing Your Life

One of the events in the summer Olympics is the PENTATHLON. It is composed of 5 events: Pistol shooting, Fencing, Horseback riding, Running and Swimming. The pentathlete's goal is to succeed in all 5 areas, not just 1 or 2.

Our life is a pentathlon of 5 purposes, which we must keep in balance. God's 5 purposes for our life:

1. 'Love God with all your heart': You were planned for God's pleasure, so your purpose is to love God through worship.

2. "Love your neighbour as yourself': You were shaped for serving, so your purpose is to show love for others through ministry.

3. "Go and make disciples': You were made for a mission, so your purpose is to share God's message through evangalism.

4. 'baptize them into.. ': You were formed for God family, so your purpose is to identify with his church through fellowship.

5. 'teach them to do all things..': You were created to become like Christ, so your purpose is to grow to maturity through discipleship

Live life with a due sense of responsibility, not as those who do not know the meaning of life but as those who do. Ephesians 5:15

The 7Ups!

1. Wake Up !!

Decide to have a good day.
"This is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

Psalms 118:24

2. Dress Up !!

The best way to dress up is to put on a smile.
A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
"The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." I Samuel 16:7

3. Shut Up!!

Say nice things and learn to listen.
God gave us two ears and one mouth,
so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking.
"He who guards his lips guards his soul." Proverbs 13:3

4. Stand Up!!

. . . for what you believe in.
Stand for something or you will fall for anything.

"Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good..." Galatians 6:9-10

5. Look Up !!

. . . to the Lord.
"I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me". Philippians 4:13

6. Reach Up !!

. . . for something higher.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." Proverbs 3:5-6

7. Lift Up !!

. . . your Prayers.
"Do not worry about anything; instead PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING." Philippians 4:6
